Radovan Čerevka:
Pochybné diorámy / Douptful dioramas

Chlapčenská hra s vojačikmi. To bolo to prvé, čo ma napadlo, keď som videla inštaláciu Radovana Čerevku ako jedného z finalistov Ceny Oskára Čepana ešte v roku 2005 v Galérii mesta Bratislavy.

Vernisáž vo štvrtok 24. 9. 2015 o 18.00, výstava potrvá do ± 30. 10. 2015.

A to všetko poskladané do pochybných celkov a diorám.

Radovan Čerevka /Doubtful Dioramas

Boys’ game with toy soldiers. That was the first thing that occured to me when I saw the installation of Radovan Čerevka as one of the four finalists of Oskára Čepan Award back in 2005 at the Bratislava City Gallery. Since then, Čerevka managed to appear in the final exhibition of Oskár Čepan Award two more times – in 2011 with the group Kassaboys and in 2013 on his own again, as the winner. And since then, I follow the development of his work, which extends far beyond my first association.

But let’s start to explain his works through this child’s play, as they gradually revealed to me. Radovan Čerevka thus plays with small pawns of soldiers, but also an accurate model of military equipment. Modelling is used not just as a medium of expression but also one of the topics of his work. He accumulates modelling grids, or stamps them into plastic material and then casts this newly made object. The result is almost archetypal table that could occur in a glass case next to cuneiform tables. Only time and topics are a little different.

Another important component of Čerevka’s work is the mass media. His works reconstruct media images and news from various data and provenance. Originally horrifying scenes are converted to modeling landscapes and still lifes, which appearance is close to weirdly arranged scenes in some local historical museum. Links to media are present not just as recontructions of specific events. In Čerevka’s works there are often also materialised infographics and diagrams taken from newspapers that overlap with other object layers. Postmodern puzzle of objects and meanings of his still lifes complete the original articles and “souvenirs” from countries with war conflicts. Burqa as a mountain and a historical headgear as a reference to colonial past. That all assembled into doubtful ensembles and dioramas.
