Keď mi Katarína Poliačiková prvý krát navrhla názov jej samostatnej výstavy v galérii Plusmínusnula, hneď som vedela, že ma to bude baviť. Tak, ako geológov vyslobodil čas, pomyslela si, vyslobodil astronómov vesmír. Pôvodný výrok z poviedky Stars od Thomasa McGuane sme z Angličtiny prekladali spolu v niekoľkých mailoch – aby neznel príliš kostrbato. V téme výstavy sme si však porozumeli výborne.

Exaktné prírodné vedy, spomínané v názve výstavy, sa nemusia vždy chápať až tak exaktne. Priestor a čas, ktorý astronómia a geológia skúmajú, je obrovský, neporovnateľný s ľudským vnímaním. Prístup Kataríny Poliačikovej k tejto téme je veľmi osobný. Už dávno chápe neuchopiteľnosť vesmíru, jeho nesúmerateľnosť s čímkoľvek ľudským. A práve toto pochopenie ju oslobodzuje. Na výstave porovnáva miliardy rokov vesmíru so svojím životom, stavia ho do kontrastu so svojím subjektívnym vnímaním. Gumičky do vlasov jej priateliek versus nekonečno a krehký autoportrét autorky balansujúcej na meteorite. 30 rokov skúmania vesmíru, ktorý je stále rovnako neuchopiteľný. Ľudská pamäť, zachytená na fotografii, a nepredstaviteľne dlhý čas, ktorý uplynul od počiatku všetkého, čo nám je známe.
Katarína Poliačiková študovala na Akadémii umení v Banskej Bystrici a neskôr na bratislavskej VŠVU, kde tento rok dokončila aj svoje doktorandské štúdium. Vo svojej tvorbe sa zameriava na kolektívnu a osobnú pamäť, originalitu, predstieranie a privlastnenie. Často sa odvoláva na známych svetových autorov (Gabriel Orozco, Félix González Torres, Tony Cragg, …), ktorých diela komentuje alebo dekonštruuje. Často pracuje s vlastnými spomienkami, vytvára si osobné mytológie, ktoré posúvajú jej diela takmer na hranicu súkromnej arteterapie.

The very moment that Katarína Poliačiková suggested the name for her solo exhibition in the Plusmínusnula Gallery to me, I was certain that I will enjoy it. “The way geologist liberated in time, she thought, astronomers are freed by space.” We struggled with the translation of the original quote from the short story “Stars” written by Thomas McGuane back and forth in quite a few emails to avoid making it sound too stiff. But we understood each other pretty well when it came to the topic of the exhibition.
The exact natural sciences mentioned in the title of the exhibition do not necessarily need to be understood in such an “exact” manner. Time and space, the main subjects of astrology and geology, are too vast to comprehend with human perception. The approach of Katarína Poliačiková to this topic is very personal and intimate.
She has understood the notion of the incomprehensibility of space, so incomparable to anything in the human world. And it’s exactly this understanding of hers that sets her free. She isn’t afraid to compare billions of years in the history of space with her own life, she compares it to her own subjective perception. Hairbands of her girlfriends versus the infinity or a delicate self-portrait of her, balancing on top of a meteor. Thirty years of researching the space that stays just as incomprehensible as ever. Human memory captured on a photograph, and the unimaginable amount of time that has passed since the very beginning of everything that we know.
Katarína Poliačiková studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Banska Bystrica and later earned both Master’s and Postgraduate degrees at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava. The focus of her art works is on collective and personal memory, originality, pretence and appropriation. She often quotes renowned authors (Gabriel Orozco, Felix González Torres, Tony Cragg, …), commenting on or deconstructing their works. Working with her own memories, she creates personal mythologies that transform her art pieces almost into a kind of private art therapy.
