Výstava predstaví tvorbu dvoch mladých slovenských autoriek Kataríny Hruškovej a Lucie Scerankovej. Katarína Hrušková absolvovala Gerrit Rietveld Academie v Amsterdame a tento rok nastupuje na londýnsku Royal College of Art. Žije a pracuje v Londýne.
Lucia Sceranková po štúdiách na bratislavskej VŠVU, pokračovala na pražskej Akadémii výtvarných umení, kde končila minulý rok. Žije a pracuje v Londýne a Prahe.

Základom tvorby Kataríny Hruškovej je príbeh, pričom jej hlavnými vyjadrovacími prostriedkami sa stávajú text, fotografia a video. Tieto tri nástroje využíva samostatne alebo vo vzájomných kombináciách, no vždy ostávajú v rovnocenných pozíciách. Príbehy, ktoré konštruuje sa odohrávajú na hranici uveriteľnosti a spôsobom, akým ich rozpráva, svoje publikum udržiava v napätí.
Dôležitým východiskom autorky je fascinácia ľudovými rozprávkami. Zaujíma sa o ich obsah, ale predovšetkým skúma, akým spôsobom komunikujú. Ich najdôležitejšou funkciou je transport morálneho ponaučenia, preto je ich reč veľmi priamočiara a jednoduchá, využíva univerzálne, silné symboly, heslá, čísla a repetíciu. Stopy podobných stratégií sa objavujú aj v autorkiných príbehoch, ale obrazy, ktoré vznikajú zdanlivo jednoduchým spôsobom, sú prekvapivo rafinované. Autorka vytvára podmienky, aby publikum uverilo tomu, čo mu predkladá. Zaujíma ju sledovať, ako sa z fiktívnej informácie stáva fakt; a naopak.
Lucia Sceranková sa v poslednom čase venuje hlavne práci s fotografickým obrazom. Dôležitým momentom autorkinej tvorby je téma viacerých svetov, ilúzie a mýtu. Vytvára si platformu, kde môžu vznikať jej vlastné mytológie. Vo svojej tvorbe často recykluje obrazy, ktoré sú až archetypálne zviazané s istými významami a asociáciami. Buduje priestor, kde im priradzuje nové úlohy. Vzniká jemný pohyb medzi všeobecnou – kolektívnou rovinou mýtu a rovinou osobnej mytológie. Obrazy často vychádzajú z fascinácie konkrétnymi motívmi, ktoré zbiera a následne dáva do vzájomných vzťahov. Podstatným aspektom je latentná narativita, pričom autorka konštruuje dej postupným kladením vrstiev v rámci jedného obrazu a otvára priestor významovým asociáciám. Vznikajú imaginatívne scenérie a krajiny, v ktorých využíva jednoduché, analógové, podomácky vyrobené „špeciálne efekty“. Samotná fotografia sa často stáva súčasťou výsledných výjavov ako kulisa. Popri autonómnej vizuálnej kvalite obrazu a tematike ilúzie a mýtu, o ktoré sa Sceranková zaujíma, sa jej tvorba dotýka v súčasnosti stále príťažlivého vzťahu reality a obrazu a obrazu jeho obrazu.
Tvorba autoriek sa v mnohých miestach stretáva. Obe autorky sa zaujímajú o mýtus, či už ide o rozprávky alebo iné v spoločnosti prítomné mytológie, autorky preberajú ich stratégie, budujú si vlastný priestor, kde s nimi ďalej pracujú. Dôležitým spoločným momentom ich práce je narábanie s príbehom; rozprávanie je základom Kataríninej tvorby, Luciina práca tiež vychádza z príbehu, no v závere ho redukuje na mikrodej. V dielach autoriek je prítomná fascinácia tematikou ilúzie, krásy, viacerých svetov, vzťahu reality a obrazu. Priťahujú ich archetypálne symboly, ktoré si privlastňujú, nanovo používajú a otvárajú významové asociácie.
V ich tvorbe sa stretávame s jednoduchosťou a zdanlivou naivitou. Tieto sa však dokážu stať dokonalými nástrojmi manipulácie.

Katarína Hrušková a Lucia Sceranková / Tempered glass
The exhibition will present works of two young Slovak artists, Katarína Hrušková and Lucia Sceranková.Katarína Hrušková graduated from Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam and this year she joins London’s Royal College of Art.She lives and works in London.
After finishing studies at VŠVU in Bratislava, Lucia Sceranková carried on studying at Academy of Fine Arts in Prague where she graduated last year.She lives and works in London and Prague.
Works of Katarína Hrušková are based on stories and her main means of expression are text, photography and video.She uses the three tools individually or in mutual combinations, but they always retain their equal values.The stories that she creates take place on the border of believability and the manner in which she tells them keeps her audience in suspense.
Fascination by folk fairy tales is an important source for the artist.She is interested in their content and, above all, examines the way in which they communicate.Their most important function is the transfer of a moral lesson and therefore their language is very straightforward and simple and uses universal and strong symbols, passwords, numbers and repetition.Traces of similar strategies also appear in the artist’s stories, but images which, seemingly, arise in simple way are surprisingly tricky.The artist creates conditions whereby audience believes what it is presented with.She is interested in observing how fictional information becomes the fact and vice versa.
Recently, Lucia Sceranková has dedicated herself mostly to working with photographic images.Significant momentum in the artist’s work is the theme of multiple universes, illusion and myth.She creates a platform where her own mythologies can develop.In her work, she often recycles images which are even in archetypal manner tied with certain meanings and associations.She builds the space where she assigns them new roles.Gentle movement arises between the general – collective plane of the myth and the plane of personal mythology.Images are often based on fascination by specific motives which she collects and subsequently puts into mutual relations.Latent narrative is an essential aspect and the artist builds the story by gradual laying the layers within a single image and opens the space for semantic associations.Imaginative sceneries and landscapes are created, where she uses simple, analog, homemade “special effects”.Photography itself often becomes part of the resulting scene as a set piece.In addition to the autonomous visual quality of an image and the theme of illusion and myth, which Sceranková is interested in, her work touches the currently still attractive relationship between reality and image and image of its image.
Works of the artists meet in many areas.Both artists are interested in a myth, be it fairy tales or other mythologies present in society; the artists adopt those strategies and build their own space where they work with them further.Significant joint moment of their work is dealing with a story; storytelling is the basis of Katarína’s work, Lucia’s work is also based on a story but she reduces it to a micro-story at the end.Fascination with themes of illusion, beauty, multiple universes, relation between reality and image is present in works of both artists.They are attracted by archetypal symbols which they appropriate and re-use and open semantic associations.
We encounter simplicity and apparent naivety in their works.They may, however, become perfect tools for manipulation.
